Protecting Your Eyes from the Sun

Who doesn't love the feel of the sun on their skin? We also know that it damages the skin, so we wear sunblock. Protecting your eyes can be just as important as protecting your skin. See an optometrist on our optometry team at Ritz and Johnson in Ocala, FL, to make sure that your eyes stay as healthy as possible.

Avoid midday

If it is possible, stay indoors between 10 am and 4 pm, when the sun is the strongest. If you must be outside, consider taking extra percussions around that time to help make sure you can see well.

Wear a Hat

Wearing a hat that is designed to be sun protective can may help reduce the exposure to UV rays. This can be helpful with babies and children who may have a hard time wearing sunglasses.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are so much more important than just a fashion statement. Look for the amount of protection they provide. Be sure they fit correctly as well. If they don't fit well, the rays might still be able to get to your eyes around the sunglasses. This can also be uncomfortable.

If you get prescription sunglasses, they will be fitted to your face to make sure that you get the protection you require.

Polarized Lenses

Water and snow reflect the sunlight and can make it difficult to protect your eyes. Polarized lenses can help reduce glare and improve your vision under these conditions.

Damaged Caused by UV Rays

UV rays might increase your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. High amounts of sunlight is also uncomfortable. Sunglasses from our optometry team can help protect your eyes and help keep outdoor activities fun during the summer.
