Treatment of Eye Diseases

services

Whether you have been diagnosed with an eye disease or you are at-risk for eye diseases, we can assist you. Here at the Ritz & Johnson Fashion Eyecare Center, we provide patients with comprehensive vision and eye services. We work with patients who have common eye diseases including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic and/or hypertensive retinopathy.

Glaucoma Treatment

If a patient has glaucoma the optic nerves connecting the brain to the eyes are damaged. While this eye disease is incurable, we can provide treatment to help slow down the progression of glaucoma and preserve their vision. If left untreated glaucoma will lead to blindness. The treatments focus on the reduction of pressure inside the eyes, which can be done with eye drops and/or eye surgeries.

Treating Cataracts in Ocala, FL

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear natural lenses inside the eyes. Cataract symptoms include blurry/foggy vision, halos/glare at nighttime or daytime, light sensitivity, changes in color perception, and glare during the day. Fortunately, cataracts can be successfully treated with eye surgery. This is an outpatient procedure (meaning you will go home the same day) and it is usually very successful. As your optometrist in Ocala, we work closely with an ophthalmologist (eye surgeons) to offer pre- and post-operative care for cataract surgery. We also make the appropriate referrals to an eye surgeon in your insurance network and who is located near you to make the treatment process simpler. Our network of ophthalmologists are highly recommended surgeons who are vetted to ensure you will receive the greatest care.

Macular Degeneration Treatment

Macular degeneration is an age-related eye disease that results in permanent vision loss. The National Eye Institute states that age-related macular degeneration is the primary cause of vision loss in seniors. If a patient has macular degeneration the eye doctor can slow the progression of the vision loss. While curing macular degeneration is not possible, through treatment of the disease patients will be able to retain their vision for longer. Some treatments include taking a specialized formula of vitamins and minerals that have been proven to decrease vision loss from AMD by 25 percent in patients.

Treating Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetic complication that affects the eyes. It is caused by damage to the retinal blood vessels due to high blood sugar levels. Patients with early stages of diabetic retinopathy may show no symptoms, which is why it is very important to have yearly dilated eye exams. Patients with diabetic retinopathy may have bleeding or swelling of the retina, which in return can cause new blood vessels to grow leading to possibly blinding diseases such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, etc. These complications require immediate treatment. Some of the diabetic retinopathy symptoms include fluctuating vision (glasses work some days but don’t work other days), blurred vision, spots in the vision, and vision loss.
