Scleral Contact Lenses

The availability of many different types of contact lenses has made providing clearer vision for patients easier and more effective than ever. Scleral contact eyes differ from ordinary contact lenses in that they are larger and cover more areas of the white of the eyes, making them the best choice for addressing several eye conditions. At Ritz & Johnson Eye Care in Ocala FL, we offer a wide range of specialty contact lenses including scleral lenses.

What Are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral contact lenses are noticeably bigger than conventional lenses. They are made to vault over the surface of the cornea, which makes it possible for individuals with particularly irregular corneas to be able to wear contact lenses. These lenses are available in a variety of different sizes to accommodate different problems of the corneal surface. They are gas permeable and vault over the natural cornea, which creates a fluid reservoir for greater comfort. If you have not been able to wear conventional contact lenses, scleral lenses may be right for you.

Who Needs Scleral Lenses?

Individuals who have keratoconus, a condition in which the normally dome-shaped cornea becomes more cone-shaped, can benefit from scleral lenses. This disorder causes blurred vision and greater sensitivity to light and glare. Conventional contacts may not be sufficient to correct the problem, but lenses can help. In addition, scleral lenses can be used to aid cases of severe dry eyes or corneal transplants. Corneas that have developed problems due to previous eye surgery can also benefit from wearing scleral lenses.

Getting Fitted for Scleral Lenses

The fitting of scleral lenses requires greater training and skill from the optometrist. The surface of the cornea must be mapped using a special computerized device to achieve a correct fit. Also, learning to insert and remove scleral lenses takes more time than conventional lenses, but the improved result makes them well worth the effort.
